Coe painted the crocodile whilst working on the minimalist interiors series. He describes this style as ‘being removed’, in that he builds the central figure from a sketch and ads layers of colour, but then whiting out areas to accentuate nuances of colour and adding the ripples of water to give peripheral perspective of the crocodile
