Caring For Your Timber:

MCM House timber products are designed to give you many years of enjoyment. Our timber is sourced from local and international indigenous hardwoods and are pre-seasoned to ensure maximum longevity. The beauty of choosing natural timber products are the unique characteristics and features within, such as varying colours, grains, and textures.

The natural characteristics of timber also respond to the environments in which they are placed. Splits and cracks may appear and should not be seen as a fault or a flaw, but should be celebrated as the timber takes on its own unique character. These changes in the timber will not compromise the construction or structural integrity of the furniture. And, as we cannot control the environment in which you place your timber product, we cannot control or predict the changes you will see in your timber. We suggest to minimise movement in the timber, it should not be placed outside in direct sunlight, near fireplaces, or in heavily air-conditioned areas.

We’re aware some clients prefer to avoid any characterisation and instead retain the showroom appearance of their piece. For this we always recommend surface protection; tablecloths or place mats for meals, avoid hot surface contact, avoid oils, grease, and spills such as butter. 

Maintaining Your Timber:

Like any big investment piece in life, timber products do require maintenance or restoration from time to time, depending on how it is used and cared for. In order to care for the appearance of your timber product, we suggest avoiding direct contact with heat, liquid, and abrasive cleaners or chemicals. To clean your timber simply use a damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust.

The MCM aesthetic is for our timber products to gain character and reflect our lifestyles over time. However should you want to retain the original appearance of your timber item, we suggest a water-based sealer (clear matte finish) be applied every 12 months. 

MCM House sofas, beds and cushions are made from a selection of curated fabrics. To best care for these fabrics we recommend vacuuming on a weekly basis to remove dust and dirt. We suggest you avoid placing these fabrics in direct sunlight, as UV will cause fading and a change in colour may occur over time. We recommend treating any spills or marks immediately with the help of a qualified professional upholstery cleaner.

To clean your fabric and linen covers, use a professional upholstery cleaner only. Note, we don't recommend using a washing machine, or a dry cleaner.

It’s normal for our customers to update their fabric and linen covers every few years. A life well lived means plenty of chill time on the sofa. As such, a sofa is often the most popular destination in a home, and its appearance can reflect this over time. We have a range of linen covers that are available for online purchase here

MCM House rattan and cane is fashioned from the steam-bent poles of the Rattan Palm, a spiny sub-tropical palm that grows like a vine. To clean our Rattan furniture, we suggest brushing lightly with dry soft bristle brush. This will ensure dirt is removed from between the reed strands.

Rattan can withstand moisture to a certain extent, but you should avoid excessive water coming into contact, as it may cause the Rattan fibres to become limp or loose. 

The MCM House Bamboo Collection is sustainably grown and produced. We work with a small family owned business to produce unique pieces that are made from raw bamboo. This means no pesticides, fertilisers, or herbicides are used to grow the bamboo. Like all natural materials, bamboo does require some care from time to time to ensure it’s longevity. In order to care for the appearance of your bamboo, wipe off all spills immediately to reduce the risk of marks, and avoid using any abrasive cleaners or chemicals. After cleaning we recommended you apply a water based natural exterior wood oil.

This product is not intended for permanent outdoor use. To help care for your bamboo products, we recommend that pieces be covered under shelter and brought inside from rain and weather conditions.

It is natural for seat foams in sofas to soften, and cushion fillings to settle over time. This is by design, and ensures maximum comfort and the desired MCM look and feel. If you were to sit on one particular seat most of the time, then naturally this will cause that seat to soften more than the others.

For maximum comfort, we suggest regularly rotating cushions to maintain their shape and loft. Cushion inserts can always be invigorated by simply laying them out in the sun to air.

Leather sourced by MCM House is generally corrected grain, which means it has a protected layer. We ensure our cow hides are tanned and dyed with products that do not contain harmful substances. The beauty of leather is that it’s a natural material, so any wrinkles or small defects should be considered a feature that certifies the quality of the leather. It’s also normal that over time the leather may undergo slight discolouration with exposure to direct sunlight or sources of heat.

To maintain your leather we suggest regularly removing dust, as it can clog the pores of the leather which limits natural perspiration. To do this always use a soft and dry cloth. Do not use brushes as the bristles can damage the leather. A fresh spillage is always easier to clean than an old one, so attend immediately using soapy water, rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Do not use detergents, abrasives, bleach or household cleaners.

Marble and Travertine are natural and porous stones. Each piece of stone is unique, and has inherent qualities that will vary from piece to piece, including veining, tint, and density. As Marble and Travertine Stones are porous by nature, special care needs to be taken to maintain its appearance.

- Our stone tops are lightly sealed before shipping, they are porous by nature and can be easily stained, scratched or chipped if special care is not given.
- Protect from acidic substances, for example wine and coffee. Always blot spills immediately and rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
- To prevent ring marks, place coasters or trivets under glasses and dishes; use mats or runners beneath hard objects that might scratch the surface.
- Do not place hot items directly onto marble surfaces.
- Do not use chemical cleansers, dusting sprays, abrasive cleaners or furniture polish.
- Dust frequently with a soft, dry cloth. Wash periodically with a cloth dampened with warm water, and if necessary, a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid. Use a second damp cloth to remove the soap.

The stainless steel used in our MCM collection is either polished or satin. We use grade 304 stainless steel, unless otherwise specified. Stainless will not rust, however it should never come into contact with salty water for extended periods of time, as this will cause the onset of rust.

To care for your stainless steel, make sure you use a soft cloth or micro fibre cloth with a glass cleaner product. Do not use any abrasive sponges, as they can leave light scratches on the stainless-steel finish.

Outdoor Upholstery

MCM House outdoor fabrics are specially treated to withstand a wide range of weather conditions. To ensure good times and good looks for your outdoor furniture, we recommend:
- Regularly brushing lightly with a dry, soft bristle brush. The aim being to dust off dirt before it can become embedded in the fabric. 
- For everyday stains, brush off dirt and wash with mild soap and lukewarm water solution, no more than 30°c. Use a sponge or soft bristle brush to clean where needed. Rinse thoroughly to remove soap and allow to air dry.
- Avoid letting water sit for prolonged periods of time on the fabric, as this can lead to staining or discolouration. Tip cushions on their sides with the zipper facing down and unzipped to ensure that all water drains out.
- Store cushions in a cool, dry place when they are not in use for prolonged periods of time.
- We recommend using furniture covers when items are not in use; furniture, cushions and covers should be clean and dry before covering. Ideally, cushions should be removed (whenever possible) before covering the frames for longer than a few days to avoid mould and mildew build-up.
- For longevity of your product do not leave upholstered furniture uncovered in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
- Do not tumble dry or dry clean. 

Teak

Left to age naturally outside, the colour of Teak will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layer of the wood begin to fade away. The process depends on the degree of sunlight and rain exposure. Teak may be refreshed periodically using 250grit sandpaper. Light sanding can be done to maintain golden teak colour.

To look after Teak, we recommend brushing off any debris and wipe with a damp cloth and if cleaning is required use a mild soap. Regular cleaning will minimise the chance of mould growth but if mould growth does occur clean it immediately using a teak cleaning solution. Never cover with plastic or PVC. The timber must be able to breathe, otherwise mildew will grow. 

Outdoor Woven Rattan

We recommend brushing off all dirt and debris from the surface. Use a mild soap and water solution to clean with a soft brush or soft cotton fabric cloth to wipe clean. Allow to air dry before using. Do not use abrasive cleaners or applicants. Chemical and sealants should be avoided.

HPL - High Pressure Laminate

High Pressure Laminate (HPL), a super sleek and durable material that is extremely strong and resistant to scratches, impact, stains, abrasion, water and heat.

To clean HPL, we recommend washing with water and gentle soap to keep it clean or simply use a dry cloth to wipe clean of dust. Allow to dry completely before use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or applicants. Chemicals and sealants should be avoided.
